This book is incredibly well crafted. The author lays a groundwork for important shifts, rethinking, and reprioritizing to occur in the classroom, the building, and within policy, but never oversimplified the work to “just follow these easy steps!” Thanks to reading this book, I’ve added 5 more suggested titles (she did a great job with citing many other works) to my to-read list and have some work to do in the meantime. This book was thought-provoking, affirming, and well-organized. It’s a must-read for every teacher and education leader.
Venet attempts to weave together two prominent threads in education today: equity work and trauma-informed practices. With a critical eye, the author does a wonderful job of blending the two and demonstrating how we need both in order to meet the needs of students. While there are practical strategies throughout the book, this isn't a checklist book. It's about foundations, philosophies, and theory. Doing equity and being trauma-informed can't be represented in something like "10 easy steps." It's tough work grounded in the inherent worth and humanity of our students.It's a worthwhile read and can help guide future conversations.
